MWRP Indonesia: Strengthening Local Government Coordination and Capacity in Best Waste Management Practices in South Sulawesi Province

The overall project goal is to strengthen the Gowa government’s coordination and capacity in solid waste management (SWM), drawing upon the experience and best practices from the SWM system functioning in Makassar City. The Makassar City government has instituted a unique approach for collaboration with community residents which has resulted in an inclusive, effective SWM system. The project will adapt Makassar City’s policies and waste management governance to the conditions in Gowa.

Additionally, the operationalization of a new central bank sampah (waste bank) building in the district of Somba Opu (in Gowa Regency) will be facilitated, studied, and documented, to serve as a guide for other districts to address their waste management problems.The establishment of the central bank sampah in Somba Opu will enable the community-based bank sampah to obtain higher prices for their recyclables and will serve to incentivize other community-based groups to consider organizing new bank sampah.
