This fact sheet provides information on USAID’s approach to scaling up renewable energy in partner countries. Advancing technologies and falling prices have enabled global investment in renewable energy to surpass $300 billion per year in recent years and is projected to remain elevated for decades to come. This rapid growth in renewable energy deployment has provided the opportunity to share important lessons about what it takes to transform the power sector and dramatically increase the percentage of clean electricity powering sustainable economic growth around the world.

Included in the fact sheet is information on the six key activities USAID uses to scale up renewable energy in partner countries.The key activities include 1) renewable energy targets and strategic energy planning, 2) smart incentives 3) grid integration, 4) renewable energy zones, 5) competition in procurement and 6) finance. USAID partners in Scaling Up Renewable Energy include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Colombia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Pakistan, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam. These 14 countries have added 50,000 megawatts of clean renewable power since 2010.
